Battle for sailing supremacy
THE KFC-Monsoon Regatta Yacht competition in Kuala Terengganu this year provided some hot action on the waves.
Competitors from the Malaysia Yachting Associatio (MYA) dominated the event.
They sailed away with top honours in four main categories.
MYA sailor Khairulnizam Mohd Affendy emerged champion in the Laser Standard category, besting second-placed Nik Ashraf Qaedy as well as third-placed Azri Suhami from the Terengganu Yachting Association.
Another MYA member Mohamad Daniel Fauzi won the Windsurfing category while Zainal Misran from PSC as well as Muhammad Husaini Mohd Rodzi from PPLNP came in second and third respectively.
Meanwhile, MYA pairings Muhamad Faizal Orizan and Ahmad Syukri Abd Aziz as well as Khairunnisa Mohd Affendy and Norashikin Mohd Sayed clinched the first and second places respectively in the Dinghy category.
Another MYA member Muhd Dhiauddin Rozaini bested 25 others to be crowned champion of the Optimist Division B category.
Terengganu Tourism committee chairman Datuk Abdul Rahin Mohd Said, who presented the prizes to the winners, said that such competitions would indeed lure more tourists to the state.
“The state government fully supports this event. It will also produce future Malaysian champions in the yachting sport.
“I congratulate the winners for performing admirably,” he said.
He added that the spillover effects of the recent competition, which included an influx of visitors to the state, was beneficial for the locals.
“The Monsoon Cup is among the most awaited events in the state.
“It has helped to showcase the state more,” he said.
