Fun time with numbers
Numbers game: Participants at the second Malaysia Sudoku Championship last year. FANCY yourself an ace when it comes to the logic-based number puzzle Sudoku? Well, then pit yourself against other Sudoku diehards at the upcoming Third Malaysia Sudoku Championship, to be held at the Summit Subang, USJ, on Dec 1 and 2.
Organised by the Malaysia Sudoku Society, the competition is divided into four categories — Students, Senior Citizens, Open, and 1Sudoku.
Attractive prizes that include shopping vouchers, electrical appliances, books and hampers worth more than RM20,000 are up for grabs in the challenge.
One of the highlights of the event will be the special appearance of Japanese creator and godfather of Sudoku, Maki Kaji.
Other things to watch out for are the sale of exclusive Sudoku books from Kaji’s Tokyo-based puzzle publishing house Nikoli Co Ltd, a Slitherlink helpdesk and Mensa IQ tests for visitors.
Since July, The Star has been the first and only Malaysian newspaper to offer daily exclusively handcrafted Sudoku puzzles direct from Nikoli.
These manually-created puzzles are more stimulating and challenging to work on, compared to the usual ones generated by computer software.
On Sundays, readers of the paper also get to stretch their grey matter with the new Slitherlink puzzle, another fun Nikoli product.
“Sudoku is an incredibly unique puzzle as it appeals to just about anyone, and offers a great mental workout,” said Malaysia Sudoku Society secretary Lee Yee Dian at a press conference to announce the championship.
Lee urged all Sudoku enthusiasts to come out in force for the event. He added that there would be a helpdesk to get newcomers started on the increasingly-popular Slitherlink.
Pre-registration for the championship is required with a fee of RM10 per person.
