RM10,000 boost for 13 schools

IN support of the Government’s effort to boost the quality of English in schools, Teleflex is sponsoring RM10,000 worth of The Star Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) pullouts for 13 schools in Taiping.
Teleflex president (Europe, Middle-East, Africa) Liam Kelly said their goal was to reinforce students’ learning of English with creative and relevant activities that would inspire a desire for improvement in the subject.
“The programme is designed to meet the proficiency needs of students at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels,” he said after presenting a RM10,000 mock cheque to The Star regional editor (north) Choi Tuck Wo and regional operations manager (north) Chung Chok Yin in Penang yesterday.
Also present were Teleflex vice-president operations (EMEA and Asia) Tony Kennedy, Teleflex (EMEA) associate HR director Colin Curran, Teleflex Medical Sdn Bhd HR director Khrishan Kumar Chint and The Star circulation manager (north) Oun Sui Leng.
A leading global medical device player from the US, Teleflex’s plant in Taiping employs some 2,300 workers and manufactures invasive and disposable medical devices for the export market.

Kelly added that Teleflex started its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme in Taiping since 1994 when it sponsored 30 stone benches in Taiping Lake Gardens.
“We will be providing more benches next month,” he said, adding that they also sponsored food stalls since 2000 during the annual charity week organised by Sekolah Semangat Maju, a special children school.
In 2005, the company donated wheelchairs to Taiping Hospital while a health care fair is organised at Teleflex Medical in Taiping every year where panel doctors provide health screenings and dental check-ups for employees.
