All set for action: Lim striking a pose. ZERO Fitness Dance Studio will be organising the Malaysia World Belly Dance Day (WBDD) in Penang from May 18 to May 20.
The highlights of the three-day programme include the Harmony Hafla, an eight-course round table charity belly dance dinner, which will be held on May 19.
The dinner at the Bayview Beach Resort will feature performances by studio principal Conny Lim and her dancers as well as international and Malaysian dancers.
Multi-award-winning performing artiste and master of props Mia Sha’uri from Puerto Rico will be the VIP performer.
Organised for the fifth consecutive year, the dinner aims to raise RM30,000, which will be channelled to the Women’s Centre for Change and the HD Training House.
“Besides promoting and cultivating authentic belly dancing and to clear public misconception towards it, the dinner also functions as a platform to encourage teamwork and to provide for the underprivileged,” said organising committee member Lisa Khoo.
Budding belly dancers will have the chance to hone their skills with the maestro herself as Sha’uri will be conducting two workshops daily on May 18 and May 20 which comprise of ‘Samba Belly Fusion Choreography’, ‘Flamenco Oriental Technique’, ‘Romantic Raks Sharqi Combination’ and ‘Dramatic Bellydance Choreography’.
Her wide range of professional artistic talents includes Cabaret, Gypsy, Latin, Tribal and Bomba with much captivating style and grace.
She has also collected notable accolades such as the Belly Dancer of the Universe 2008, Double Crown Gypsy Stylist 2008, Yaa Halla, Yall People’s Choice Solo Cabaret Professional Star 2008 and 2009, and Belly Dancer of the Year 2010.
State Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang will grace the dinner.
WBBD is celebrated internationally on the second Saturday in May annually, as a special day to commemorate the art of dancing and to contribute back to the community through charity.
