Lure of a lucrative trade

NARCOTICS trade is a serious social menace in the country because some of the traffickers can become rich overnight just by processing and distributing the latest designer drugs, said the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim.
To make it worse, the procedures to process drugs can easily be downloaded from the Internet.
Such developments tend to complicate efforts to eradicate the drug trade, Comm Noor Rashid said.
He said some distributors even became millionaires due to the illicit trade.
Nowadays, many local distributors knew how to process drugs by themselves where they rented houses before converting them into mini drug laboratories, he said.
In Kuala Lumpur, syndicates rented luxury houses and converted the rooms into laboratories, he added.
“Previously when one processes drugs, a smell will emanate from them but now with new technology, no one knows that drugs are being processed inside the premises,” he said after participating in a High Profile Policing programme at the Sunway Carnival Mall in Seberang Jaya yesterday.
Present were central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Azman Abd Lah and state Narcotics Division chief Supt S. Batumalai.
Comm Noor Rashid said by smuggling 2kg of drugs per year, traffickers could make a handsome profit of RM5mil and become successful businessmen through illegal means.
As such, there was a growing attraction to be involved in the drug trade, he added.
“What is important is that the community must assist the police with information on such activities.
“Public participation is vital for the community to ensure that their neighbourhoods are clean from drugs,” he said.
Earlier, Comm Noor Rashid had a walkabout session where he interacted with several traders.
The public also witnessed a demonstration on crime prevention at the entrance to the mall.
