Perak red IC holders stage protest at NRD
IPOH: A group of people held a peaceful protest at the National Registration Department here to seek an explanation from the director about their unsuccessful applications for MyKad.
Comprising mostly senior citizens from Perak, they claimed that their applications to convert their red identity cards to MyKads had been rejected.
Several Pakatan Rakyat leaders also joined in the protest.
Department director Alias Mamat had initially only wanted to meet with their representatives but the protesters insisted that he meet all of them.
Alias stood firm that the applicants could submit their forms and that the department would look into the individual cases.
One of the red identity card holders was R. Pappa, 78, from Slim River, who said her parents had not applied for a birth certificate for her.
In another case, R. Arumugam, 72, claimed that he had a MyKad previously but when he went to get a replacement card two years ago, he was given a red identity card instead.
The retired civil servant said when he asked the officers about it, he was told that his citizenship had been stripped without any explanation.
