Spectacular Silat show kicks off festival
GEORGE TOWN: The George Town Festival 2012 (GTF) was launched in spectacular fashion, taking the audience on a journey through time during the Hang Tuah era.
Themed Silat — Our Heritage for the World, the opening show was based on the five legendary warriors from Malacca — Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu.
Into its third year, the GTF signalled the start of a month-long celebration featuring a host of performances including theatre, music, dance opera shows as well as art and food showcases.
GTF director Joe Sidek said he was relieved to finally get the festival up and running.
“Generally, I am very happy with the opening of the show and will be looking forward to see how the art culture grows in Penang during the festival,” he said.
The opening night was graced by the Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas as well as Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
In his speech yesterday, Lim said he was thrilled that so many ethnic groups had converged in support of the festival.
