IT was a happy day for R. Santhanam who reeled-in RM15,000 in cash after taking the first place for landing a 3.4kg catfish at a fishing competition held in Johor Baru recently.
Santhanam, 41, was on cloud nine after breaking a seven-year spell by becoming the champion angler at the event.
“I won fourth and fifth place in the past but I was really hoping to win first place this year,” he said, attributing experience as the winning factor.
It will come: Participants waiting patiently during the fishing competition. “Some competitions were held at this location which gave me the home ground advantage because I know some good fishing spots.
“I came here early to choose a quiet spot where the fish also feeds and this became my advantage over my competitors.”
Santhanam said the prize money would be utilised for his children’s education.
“I can give extra cash to my eldest daughter is studying in Puchong and I will also use it for my youngest son who is a form-four student,” he said.
One of the young angler at the competition Chua Yen Fong, 12, said he took interest in the hobby when he followed his father Chua Yok Kim, 49, at the age of seven.
Look what I caught: Two participants displaying their catfish. “I usually tag along when my father goes for fishing during his free time and learned about the proper fishing techniques.”
Factory worker Azmi Ghani, 38, who took part in the fishing competition for the first time said that winning wasn’t important to him.
“I took part in the competition to kill time and fishing is also my hobby.
“The competition falls on my off day and its just great to participate in it rather than wasting time at home doing nothing,” said Azmi.
The event organizer Razali Mohd Alias said the competition was held in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday.
“Every year the number of participants increases during the fishing competition and this shows that many people are taking fishing as their hobby,” said Razali.
Scores of people had flocked to tasik Dahlia as spectators in the fishing competition organized by Mawar Kite Marketing and Event Management and Pasir Gudang Municipal Council.
