THE entire Kampung Baru Coldstream was abuzz with excitement upon learning that Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung would be visiting them during the Sungkai MCA Roadshow.
Village chief Lam Kwai Cheong said the villagers had wanted to show Chor their newly completed community hall.
“The hall was made possible by Chor.
Ready for use: The multi-purpose community hall, located about 100m from the village’s entrance, was completed May last year. “Without his help, it would still be incomplete and abandoned,” Lam related during Chor’s visit last Sunday.
Lam said the construction of the hall was halted in 2005 and the project was abandoned for five years due to insufficient funds.
“The contractor stopped work when the hall was only a third complete because they claimed that the RM400,000 allocated by the Ministry was insufficient to cover the cost of construction.
“Seeing its sorry state during his last visit here two years ago, the Minister immediately approved a RM1.5mil allocation and the hall was completed last May,” said Lam.
The completed hall, he added, has become a landmark, which all villagers took pride in.
Happy to be here: Chor (left) shaking hands with Kampung Baru Coldstream villager Chai Yee Moi (right), 54, during his visit. “We are thrilled to show the Minister the hall he helped us build,” Lam said.
Speaking to the villagers, Chor said he was glad the villagers could finally hold large functions and festival celebrations at the hall.
“I hope the village committee will make full use of it while taking good care of it,” he said, adding that his Ministry would help in any way it could for the benefit of the people.
