THE normally quiet village of Kampung Sungai Pinang in Balik Pulau bustled with excitement and energy when 254 National Service trainees from Kem PLKN Sri Mutiara dropped by for a community service programme.
The trainees, divided into three groups, took part in a gotong royong to clean and spruce up the village, visited old folks and poor households at their homes, and joined in a community cookout for a kenduri (feast).
Sungai Pinang 1Malaysia Community chairman Zakaria Aziz said the programme was to promote interaction between the NS trainees and the villagers in keeping with the 1Malaysia concept.
About 1,000 people altogether took part in the programme from 7.30am to 1pm on Saturday.
Housewife Zabedah Yusuff, 48, was all smiles as she dehulled bean sprouts with practised ease.
“This programme resembles a festival where everyone volunteers to make it a success.
“Preparation started a day earlier, where we rinsed the vegetables and cleaned the fish beforehand,” she said.
Her friend Jalilah Halim, 57, agreed, “This is a good chance for everyone, without caring about the generation gap, to work together.”
