Cancer patient in fatal plunge from hospital ward
GEORGE TOWN: A man who was suffering from throat cancer fell to his death from the fourth floor of the Penang Hospital here.
The body of Tan Jit Wan, 68, was found sprawled in a pool of blood on the grounds of the hospital at 2.35am yesterday.
It is learnt that Tan had earlier wanted to be discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment. But his request was rejected.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said Tan had been warded at the hospital since June 5 for treatment.
He said Tan fell from the fourth floor where he was warded, adding that the case has been classified as sudden death.
Tan’s only daughter had since claimed his body from the hospital mortuary.
George Town Deputy OCPD Supt Ismail Toh Paduka Idris said it was the second such incident at the hospital this year.
On May 11, a man, also 68, suffering from tuberculosis fell to his death from the third floor of the same block.
Supt Ismail, who was at the hospital yesterday for a high-profile policing programme, said he would talk to the hospital management to pay special attention to patients who were emotionally unstable.
