THE operators of the Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Selangor Expressway Berhad (Latar) have implemented a competition for schools in the district aimed at educating the students on go-green and recycling activities from June 20 to Sept 30.

The competition approved by the Education Ministry and the state education department and jointly held by the Gombak and Kuala Selangor education departments helps meet the needs of schools and administrative expenses.

“This is one of the corporate social responsibility programmes for the community while introducing Latar to the public,’’ said Latar chairman Datuk Razali Othman.

The competition held in conjunction with the highway’s first anniversary requires participating schools to collect and keep as many Latar toll receipts as possible.

First anniversary: Several competitions are being held to promote the 33km Latar Expressway which was opened to traffic on June 23 last year.

The school with the highest number will be adjudged the winner at the end of the competition.

Razali was speaking at the official opening of Latar Expressway’s Kundang east- and west-bound Rest and Recreation (R&R) by Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Ismail Md Salleh recently.

Razali said the receipts could be collected either by teachers, parents or even through contributions from the public towards a school in the area.

The best school will receive RM10,000, second place RM5,000, third place (RM3,000) fourth place (RM2,000), fifth place (RM1,000) and five consolation prizes of RM500 each.

The participating schools are SK Bandar Baru Rawang, SK Bestari Jaya, SK Tun Teja, SK Ijok, SJK (T) Ladang Sungei Buloh, SK Seri Kundang, SK Batu Arang, SK Kuang, SK Puncak Alam, SJK (T) Ladang Coalfields, SK Bandar Baru Kuala Selangor, SK Jaya Setia, SK Sungai Serai, SK Desa Alam, SJK (T) Ladang Mary, SK Selayang Jaya, SK Bukit Badong, SK Parit Serong, SK Tanjong Karang, SK (2) Gombak, SK Taman Ehsan, SK Bandar Baru Selayang (2), SK Kepong (FRIM) and SK Bandar Baru Selayang.

Also, in conjunction with its first anniversary, the public was invited to capture the best and fascinating sight of the expressway and post their pictures on the Latar Facebook page and the most popular was picked as the winner.

The competition was held from Feb 20 to April 30.

Razali said the winners were selected based on the percentage of “Likes” while 50% of the marks were given by a panel of judges.

The top three winners were presented with RM500, RM300 and RM200 respectively and 10 consolation prizes of a RM50 IKEA voucher along with a commemorative Touch n Go Latar card and entry tickets to places of interest in Kuala Selangor.

The Latar Expressway, which started operations on June 23 last year, is a two-lane dual carriageway with four interchanges at Ijok, Puncak Alam, Kuang and Templer and is part of the KL Outer Ring Road (KLOOR), a government-planned traffic dispersal scheme providing links to major networks such as the North-South Expressway, Guthrie Corridor Expressway via Federal Route 1.
