THE illegal extensions of several restaurants in PJ New Town have encroached into the road reserve thus reducing parking space for motorists.
The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) plans to demolish the extensions and create parking bays for motorists and motorcyclists.
No point: The mechanical parking contraption has failed to serve its purpose hence, it will be removed. PJ City Council engineering department is under pressure to come up with innovative methods to rearrange and create extra parking bays.
A senior council staff member said the plan to demolish the illegal extensions followed complaints that the restaurants were depriving motorists of parking space.
Councillor Chan Chee Kong said the restaurants had spent a lot of money on the renovations to provide a bigger place for people to dine.
“It is part of our PJ Walk vision. For Restoran Kam Heong we want to let them operate on the road reserve and we are trying to find an approach to help them apply for Temporary Occupational Licence (TOL). In this way we can generate some revenue,” he saod.
Chan said they would find an alternative place for motorcyclists.
Councillor Anthony Thanasayan, who is in charge of Zone 13 and covers Section 52, said there was a need for parking bays for motorcyclists in Jalan Tengah and Jalan 52/10.
“I will go around the areas this week and find a solution for the parking problems.
“We are serious in rearranging more areas for extra parking bays. The existing parking lots can be changed from L-parking to side parking to accommodate more vehicles.
Taking up space: Restoran Kam Heong has taken up the road reserve for its restaurant. “If Jalan Lapangan Merdeka, opposite Menara MBPJ, is suitable, than the planter boxes and pavement could be moved back,” he said.
On the mechanical parking contraption at the public car park, off Jalan 52/6, councillor Derek Fernandez said it would be removed soon.
Netizen and resident of Section 11 Y. S. Tham had urged the council to remove the contraption that had failed to work and only deprived those searching for a parking bay.
