Valley’s filth flows down to Klang

The Klang River is becoming more polluted with a huge amount of domestic and industral waste floating in the waterway.

A resident, Ong Seng Eng, 56, said the garbage dumped into the river by residents in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam ended up here.

“All kinds of waste ranging from plastic bottles, cans, boxes and even broken furniture are being dumped into the river.

“The image of the town is marred by this dirty sight. This river along Jalan Pasar is clearly visible when entering the town,’’ he said.

Devadass said the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) should ensure the river was clean.

He said as the council had been promoting the river for water sports, something must be done to clean up it filthy condition.

“How can they talk about beautification and water sports when the river is in such a bad condition,” he added.

State local government committee chairman Ronnie Liu said setting up garbage traps along the river would be the best solution.

He urged the Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) and State Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to instal garbage traps.

“We used to have garbage traps at strategic spots along the river in the past and it helped to keep the river clean,’’ he said.

MPK public relations officer Norfiza Mahfiz said the council had set up mini traps along main drains to prevent rubbish from flowing into the river.

“The DID is responsible for cleaning up the river.

“However, we will do our part to help keep the river clean.”
