GEORGE TOWN: A hotel here has become the first in the country to allow durians to be savoured by its guests within its premises, breaking the usual ban on the fruit.
Naza Talyya Hotel in Tanjung Bungah launched its durian packages as part of the Tourism Ministry’s campaign to promote the king of fruits, which is in season now.
“It’s the first time that a hotel has done so,” Naza Talyya Hotel head of hotels division Johari Mohd Yusof said yesterday.
He said during the promo- tion hotel guests could taste at least 15 types of durian-based dishes and beverages alongside high quality durians such as Ang Hae, Kucing Tidor, D600 and Raja Kunyit.
In collaboration with tour operators, they have drawn up “durian packages” for for- eign and domestic tourists to Pe-nang.
“These include the Durian Buffet which is priced from RM55 for adults and RM33 for children; the two-day/one-night durian package from RM115; the three-day/two-night durian package from RM335; and the Super Sunday Durian Package Lover from RM95,” he said.
A Japanese couple from Tokyo, Tadashi Joike and Hiroko Koike, both in their 70s, said they loved the durian very much and had returned to Penang after finding out about the package on the Internet.
“We plan to stay here longer because we really love the fruit, which is very expensive in Japan,” said Tadashi, who ate three durians with his wife.
They were guests at the launch of the packages by Tourism Ma- laysia deputy director-general Datuk Azizan Noordin yester- day.
The packages were part of the “Back by Popular Demand — Eat Durian As Much As You Can” campaign, which is the initiative of the Tourism Ministry in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia.
The month-long campaign was being held for the third year, but this was the first time a hotel is involved.
Some 300 hotel guests as well as walk-in visitors were at the launch of the packages — jointly organised by the hotel, selected travel agencies, AirAsia and TRI Dynamic Venture.
The promotion at Naza Talyya Hotel takes place from 4pm to 8pm daily until July 31.
