Umno leader hails move to stop logging at forest reserve
ALOR SETAR: The order to stop logging activities at Gunung Inas forest reserve in Baling is appropriate as residents there fear bigger problems in the future, said a Kedah Umno leader.
Kedah Umno chairman Datuk Paduka Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said residents in the area had raised their concern over the pollution of rivers which they depended on for their daily supply of water.
He said the residents feared the logging activities would cause bigger problems in future including mud floods during heavy rain.
He said state Barisan Nasional leaders had raised the issue on several occasions.
“The rakyat had raised their objection to the state but their objection was pushed aside by the state go-vernment,” he claimed in a statement yesterday.
It was reported that logging activities at the Gunung Inas forest reserve was stopped on July 18 until a detailed environmental impact assessment (EIA) was submitted.
Kedah Mentri Besar Incorporated (PMBKed) chief executive officer Datuk Shahbudin Shafie confirmed that the agency received a letter from the Forestry Department stating that the logging activities had been halted.
He said PMBKed had been given three months to correct any weaknesses in the Ladang Rakyat project.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azian Abdul Razak defended the logging activities, saying that the state had adhered to all the rules.
He was quoted as saying that if logging was halted, it could be due to technical issues which could be easily solved, and that the state had considered the impact on the environment and the logging was not done only for revenue.
