UNIVERSITI Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has been tasked by the state government to come up with a booklet to educate locals on Perak’s attractions.
State Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Hamidah Osman said the booklet was to equip Perakians with necessary information that would benefit tourists.
“For instance, Lenggong Valley has just been recognised by Unesco as a World Heritage Site for Archaeology.
“It will be embarrassing if the foreigners know more about it than locals,” Hamidah told reporters.
Funds for the event: Musa Dun (left) and Prof Abdullah Mohamad Said (second right) holding the mock cheque. With them is Hamidah Osman (fourth left). “UiTM will be given three months to collect and compile information on all local tourist spots, and later put it together into booklets for distribution.
“There will be two versions of the booklet. One is a simplified version for locals, traders and public transportation drivers.
“The other will be a more detailed version for local government agencies,” she said, adding that a total of 500,000 booklets would be printed and distributed.
Hamidah had earlier witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the Gua Tem-purung Gopeng Eco-Challenge 2012 between Perak Tourism Management Bhd chief executive officer Musa Dun and UiTM vice chancellor (student affairs) Prof Datuk Abdullah Mohamad Said.
The extreme sports challenge, which will be held from July 13 to 15, is open to all undergraduates.
There will be four disciplines in the challenge — running, rafting, cycling and caving — whereby participants must complete within six hours.
Participants will be flagged off at the Kampung Sungai Itek community hall before ending the race at Gua Tempurung.
