An annual affair for family
AFTER participating with his family in Penang Starwalk for the past five years, Alex Barnabas now describes it as “an annual family affair”.
The 52-year-old retired police technician said the event has become a tradition that he, his wife and their three children look forward to.
“I started taking part in Starwalk in 1978, and my family just joined me five years ago.
“They found it very interesting and fun, as well as a good way to spend quality time together,” he said.
Barnabas also described the walk as taking a trip down me-mory lane, as he would have the opportunity to stop, look and appreciate the heri- tage landmarks of George Town.
“This family outing is also a good platform for us to meet old friends and keep fit together.
“My children, of ages 19 to 24, are also school athletes, so they are naturally interested in such activities,” he added.
Also signing up for Penang Starwalk 2012 at The Star Pitt St. was Penang Thalas-saemia Society administrator Lily Boey, in her 50s, who loved the nature of the event which is easy-going and relaxing.
“This is my fifth time participating in this event and this year, I’m taking part with 10 members of the society, including my husband and daughter,” she said, adding that she would be joining the non-competition category.
Technician Mohd Jaafar Mokhtar, 40, said he was all geared up for Penang Starwalk 2012 and hopes to make it to the top 10 of the Men’s Junior Veteran category.
“The most important part of the event for me is to have fun, and also the lucky draw prizes which are very attractive,” said the father-of- four when he submitted re- gistration forms for himself and six other friends at the Star Northern Hub in Bayan Lepas yesterday.
Mohd Jaafar added that he enjoyed the heritage route when he took part last year.
“I came across so many buildings which I had not noticed before,” he said.
Meanwhile, hiring and training specialist Jasmine Thong, 28, is challenging herself by participating in the competition category this year.
“I took part the past three years in the non-competition category and this year, I want to check my fitness level.
“It is also a stepping stone for me as I will be climbing Mount Kinabalu next year,” she said when signing up for the sports event along with four other colleagues.
