Slightly clearer skies but haze is not gone yet

THE air quality in Penang has improved slightly with the Air Pollutant Index (API) dropping both on the island and in Seberang Prai.

At 7am yesterday, the API reading at Universiti Sains Malaysia was at 69, dropping to 68 by 11am.

By 5pm, it had dropped to 64.

Likewise, the API readings in Seberang Jaya also recorded a very slight drop.

The API reading was first recorded at 84 at 7am and then 83 at 11am.

In the evening at 5pm, the reading was 82.

In Prai, the reading was at 72 from 7am to 11am before dropping to 68 at 5pm.

Visibility in Bayan Lepas on Penang island also improved from 2km to 8km.

It was the same on the mainland.

In Butterworth, visibility increased from 2km to 7km and in Prai, it increased from 5km to 7km.

However, state Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment chairman Phee Boon Poh remarked that any API reading higher than 50 was still considered an unsatisfactory level.

“The combination of haze and heat will easily have a bad effect on a person’s health.

“Considering this, precautions should still be taken.

“The air has yet to clear and might still contain suspended particles,” he said.
