Sharing the Raya spirit

MAJOR hotels and shopping malls in Penang have begun to spruce up decorations as part of efforts to mark this year’s Hari Raya Adil Fitri.
They also hope to create a festive mood for their customers.
For G Hotel, its public relations manager Christina Tan said a house made up entirely of coconut leaves, is erected in front of the G-Cafe outlet on the ground floor.
“It is a new try for the hotel and we also decorate it with green twinkle lights and pelita.
Not only that, we are also selling batik goods like bags, tissue box covers, coasters and also Raya cookies,” she said.
Last year, the hotel only decorated its signature ‘G’ sign in front.
“For this year, we dressed up our logo with a songkok and a baju Melayu design,” she said.
Tan said there was also a beautiful arch next to the village house.
At the Hard Rock Hotel, sales and marketing director Betty Lim said the hotel took on the concept of a “modern and hip hop blend with a traditional” approach.
“Hotels would normally apply the traditional touches but not for us. We can be different in our decorations by incorporating musical elements. This way, we appeal to both our young customers as well as the older generation,” she said.
Parkroyal Penang Resort marketing communications manager Saw Wei Wei said it has put up a large banner with fairy lighting outside its facade.
“We also have moons and stars hanging from the ceiling to add to the festive mood.”
Equatorial Hotel Penang public relations manager Debra Gerardine Jayesuria said the decoration theme for the hotel is ‘Colours of Malaysia’ with the terrace area at the Coffee Garden adorned with flags from the different states of Malaysia.
“At the entrance to the Coffee Garden, a Moorish structure will welcome guests while the interior is gaily decorated with large colourful rattan balls and umbrellas,” she said.
Flamingo Hotel By The Beach Penang’s food and beverage manager Azhar Ramli said the hotel has installed 56 stars in the lobby and coffee house.
“The stars measure about 1m in length and they hang prominently from our ceiling. They also illuminate,” he said.
As for shopping malls, Sunshine Wholesale Mart Sdn Bhd advertising and events team leader Bryan Wong said the major decorative set up here are the six Malay-style lanterns, hanging from the ceiling in its main concourse area on the ground floor.
“Our theme this year is Insyirah (which means happiness in Arabic) Aidilfitri and we have adopted a more natural earth tone colour for the decoration in brown and dark green.”
Gama Supermarket & Departmental Store, advertising, promotions and visual merchandising department assistant manager Joseph Tan described the store’s outdoor lights as the store’s most interesting decorative feature.
“It’ll come to light in the evening in bright yellow and green colours while there are also yellow and red lights twirling at the trees outside,” he said.
1st Avenue Mall Sdn Bhd advertising and promotions senior executive Cheong Sook Yeng said the mall’s decoration is related to its events, namely the Puteri Gunung Ledang musicals on Aug 11 and 18 and the P. Ramlee musicals on Aug 12 and 19, from 4pm to 4.30pm.
“Our decorations are colourful, especially our 4.2m-high mosque structures in blue, green and glittering golden hues,” she said.
Queensbay Mall marketing communications manager Wendy Wong said customers would likely not miss the grand Malay mansion at the stage area in the mall.
“We want to send the message of prosperity with the mansion. Many people would be coming up with traditional kampung (village) house and we want to do something different.”
Gurney Plaza marketing communications manager Peter Chan said pelita is the main decoration element for the mall this year alongside fairy lights to generate a festive feel.
“We also want to showcase the Malay culture to foreign tourists.”
