Cabbies ‘revved up’ in the fight against crime
GEORGE TOWN: Taxi drivers should become the eyes and ears of police to help fight crime, said Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abd Rahim Hanafi.
“Their assistance is very much needed since they travel all over the place as part of their job.
“We will meet up with members of Federation of Penang Taxi Drivers Association once a month to find ways to tackle crime,” he said.
DCP Abd Rahim hoped that taxi drivers and the public would work hand in hand with the police in combating crime.
“They can call our 24-hour Rakan COP hotline (04-2691999) if they come across any criminal activity or suspicious figures loitering around.”
He was speaking to reporters after launching a high profile policing programme with 30 members of the Federation of Penang Taxi Drivers Association at the Raja Tun Uda Jetty in Weld Quay here.
Also present was the association president Abdul Malek Darus.
DCP Abd Rahim had earlier presented stickers and flyers containing all the relevant emergency numbers to association members and hawkers at the jetty.
Abdul Malek said they were happy to see DCP Abd Rahim coming to the ground to listen to their problems.
“We will definitely help police. We are touched to see him here,” he said, adding that the association has about 2,000 members.
