Mahathir: PAS must abandon Pakatan to pursue Islamic aims

ALOR SETAR: PAS should leave the Pakatan Rakyat coalition if it wants to continue its struggle for an Islamic country, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The former prime minister and former Umno president claimed that PAS had strayed from its fight for an Islamic country when it became part of Pakatan and was willing to change its objective to meet the needs of Pakatan coalition parties.
“They should be true to their struggle and stand strongly by it. They also can join Umno if they want because we have been fighting for Islam since the beginning,” Dr Mahathir said after breaking fast with Kampung Jerlun residents at the Al-Takwa Mosque near here last night. He also presented aid to some 1,600 needy people from the village.
Dr Mahathir said Muslims in the country were not united although Malaysia had been internationally recognised as an Islamic country.
He said the split was due to different political beliefs that resulted in three different factions - Umno, PAS and PKR.
He claimed that the split was also because Muslims in the country did not truly understand the contents of the Al-Quran and merely accepted whatever they were told by politicians.
“If Muslims in the country understand the contents of the Al-Quran, they will not be manipulated by politicians who use the religion to gain political support,” Dr Mahathir added.
He said that due to the lack of understanding of the Al-Quran, many Muslims in the country did not understand the Hudud Law and just accepted whatever that was fed to them.
“There are many verses in the Al-Quran that touches on Hudud Law that Muslims should get to know,” he said.
