Three-year-old girl drowns in club pool

KOTA KINABALU: A three-year-old girl drowned in a pool at a Tanjung Aru club where her family was spending the first day of Hari Raya.
Despite frantic efforts to save the girl, Miti Ashlee was pronounced dead on arrival at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.
The girl’s mother Erna Rohana Abd Aziz lodged a police report over the 5.20pm incident at the Kinabalu Yacht Club Sunday.
According to witnesses, there were many children playing in the pool.
When they realised that Miti had not surfaced, they alerted the adults who were near the pool.
“We do not know what actually happened but I suddenly heard shouts for help,” said a club member, who declined to be identified.
He believed that the girl might have gone to the deep end of the pool, which is 1.5m, and landed in trouble.
“The child was still alive when she was pulled out. Some of my colleagues gave her CPR but the child’s condition did not improve,” he said.
“There was nothing much anyone could do.”
Club commodore Louis Tseu said the child and her family were guests of a member.
Tseu said the club did not provide any lifeguards as it was a small pool.
“Families are required to keep watch over their children,” he said.
Apparently, a maid accompanied Miti’s family to the club.
It is not known where she was at the time of the incident.
Kota Kinabalu City deputy police chief Supt M. Chandra said police did not suspect any foul play. He said a post-mortem would be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.
