Govt urged to take stand against sectarian violence

JOHOR BARU: A Malay rights non-governmental organisation Per-tubuhan Penyatuan Pembelaan Melayu Malaysia (PPPMM) urged the Malaysian Government to take a tougher stand on sectarian violence in Myanmar involving Rohingyas.
Its president A. Rahman Mahadi also urged the Malaysian Government to be more proactive and as a member of Asean, to find a solution over the matter.
He added that the group opposes and rejected the violent action taken by the Myanmar military on the Rohingya Muslim.
“The action taken by the Myanmar Government shows that they are irresponsible and undemocratic.
“This issue must be brought to the international level where Asean countries especially Malaysia must intervene as hundreds of Rohingyas are being killed,” he said.
A. Rahman also said that Malaysia as a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) must use its influence to push the matter to other OIC members.
“We also want the Malaysian Govern-ment to cut all diplomatic ties with the Myanmar Government if they failed to solve the matter,” he said.
He also blasted Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi who kept silent over the matter.
“If she really fight for democracy for all in Myanmar then she should also voice out on the violence against Rohingyas.
“PPPMM are disappointed that Aung San Suu Kyi who fought forhuman rights and freedom choose to remain silent over the matter,” he said.
Riots, believed to have been triggered after 10 Rohingyas were killed following the rape and murder of a Rakhine woman in late May, erupted and a state of emergency was declared on June 10.
Some 1.6 million Rohingyas have fled the country with some 30,000 of them now in Malaysia.
