Council to start upgrading four more public facilities

UPGRADING work for the Jalan Kuantan market, Chowrasta market, Jalan Utama hawker site and Desa Mayang complex will start in about three months, said Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) president Datuk Patahiyah Ismail.

She said work was expected to start on the council-owned premises by year end or early 2013.

She said to date, the council had built 23 wet markets, 40 hawker complexes and 57 hawker sites.

“We will continue to upgrade and repair such public facilities to meet the needs of the hawkers, traders and visitors,” she said at the launching of the newly upgraded Bukit Gedung hawker complex in Bayan Lepas recently.

The RM1.5mil hawker complex upgrading project started in November last year.

Patahiyah said the complex initially housed 56 food and drink stalls but the number was reduced to 45 after the refurbishment.

“We found that the size of the stalls which were constructed in 1997 was no longer feasible and did not meet the requirement of the traders.
