BUTTERWORTH: A missing teenager decided to return home after nine days out on her own when she read reports about her disappearance in local newspapers.

Khoek Sal Lee, 18, showed up at her house in Teluk Air Tawar here last Friday sobbing after going missing for the past nine days.

Her father Khoek Sing Hai, 52, said he and his wife Lai Bee Yeng, 40, were thrilled to hug their daughter once again after suffering from several days of anxiety.

Apparently, the lass took a bus home and upon seeing her parents, she broke into tears.

“We were shocked when she left home, but we thank God she is safe and has come back. We will let her relate to us what had happened when she is ready to talk,” he told a press conference called by Bagan DAPSY division chairman Soon Lip Chee yesterday .

Sing Hai expressed his gratitude to the party and journalists for highlighting his daughter’s disappearance on Friday, adding that she returned home the same day after reading the reports.

He said he planned to send his daughter for a thorough medical checkup to determine her physical and mental condition.

Sing Hai, a heavy vehicle driver, said Sal Lee, who quit school in Form Four after losing interest in her studies, had left the house at about 11am on Sept 12.

“I was away at work at that time and she had apparently told her aged grandmother that she was leaving with a female friend to find a job. Sal Lee brought with her only two pairs of clothes and RM100,” he said, adding that his family and Rela members had gone looking for her.

Sing Hai said Sal Lee had temporarily worked as a shop assistant in a grocery shop earlier, adding that she was keen on working as a sales assistant in a hypermarket.

Sal Lee has two other siblings, a brother, aged 15, and sister, 14.

Soon said children with personal problems should have a conversation with their parents, relatives or friends instead of running away from home, as their safety could be at risk.
