Furniture design competition enters crucial stage
The MIFF Furniture Design Competition (MIFF FDC) entered the crucial prototyping stage for 10 finalists as they presented themselves before an international jury again.
The final judging round, led by chief judge Klaus Kummer of Germany, was held yesterday, the eve of the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF).
The prototypes will be displayed in a special showcase at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC) during MIFF 2013 to be held from today until Saturday.
The finalists were shortlisted from 198 entries received for the contest.
The seven-member jury had spent two days last October to select the finalists before they were matched with local manufacturers to construct the prototypes.
“This time, the competition challenges participants to come up with designs that reflect the Malaysian lifestyle. Many of the entries opted to use wood and also rattan,” said MIFF chairman Datuk Dr Tan Chin Huat.
“The prototyping phase is a very testing period for both the designer and manufacturer. They have to work closely together to transform the design into an actual piece of furniture. What is on paper and what can be done can be very different.”
A workshop was held in October last year to help participants prepare for the contest themed “A Tribute to the Shapes and Colours of Malaysia”.
Malaysia’s leading furniture exporter, Poh Huat Furniture Industries (M) Sdn Bhd, has stepped forward as the diamond sponsor for the second consecutive year.
Winners will be announced on Thursday during the prize presentation ceremony. The winner will walk away with the top prize of RM10,000 while the runner-up and third-placed winner will receive RM5,000 and RM2,500, respectively.
The list of finalists was dominated by those from Taylor’s University, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
The 10 finalists are Kok Wen Yee (Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus), Fong Zhao Ning (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia KL), Nur Shalihah Mamat (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia KL), Lok Ai Fang (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Stephanie Chin Shu Wei (Lim Kok Wing University Cyberjaya), Liow Heng Yee (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Chong Wai Yee (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia KL), Emmy Kong Pek Kei (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Yap Hock Sin (Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus) and Ong Jo Vie (Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus).
Students who wish to visit the showcase are required to obtain a free admission pass by emailing register@miff.com.my. For more details, log on to www.mifffdc.com
MIFF is owned by UBM Asia which is Asia’s leading exhibition organiser and the biggest commercial organiser in China, India and Malaysia.
