Putrajaya Marriott scores a hat-trick
The victorious Putrajaya Marriott Hotel and Spa captured the inter-hotel futsal 100Plus trophy for the third consecutive occasion. FAVOURITES Putrajaya Marriott Hotel and Spa extended their impressive run in the fifth inter-hotel futsal 100Plus trophy at Sports Planet in Ampang recently.
They scored a memorable hat-trick with their third consecutive triumph in the series.
The Putrajaya Marriott duo of Akmal Hakim and Khairi Wahid contributed a goal each for their side for a 2-0 victory over The Saujana Kuala Lumpur in the final.
Seasoned campaigner Khairi got Putrajaya Marriott ahead with the opening goal in the 10-minute duration of the first half before Khairi added another in the second half to wrap up the match.
Akmal went on to earn the Man of the Match award for his sterling role in the final while Khairi was voted as the Player of the Tournament.
Organising chairman Zulkarnain Mohd Zain said The Saujana found it tough in their first appearance in the final.
“Putrajaya Marriott have been dominating the inter-hotel futsal competitions in recent years. They were the more experienced side in the final. They were definitely in control of the match in the final,” he added.
Last year, the formidable Putrajaya Marriott bagged a double winning both the 100Plus trophy and the futsal challenge for the second consecutive season.
The Saujana showed their promise when they complemented their solid defensive qualities with lethal finishing up front to settle for second in the recent campaign.
Muhammad Harith Mat Rozi of The Saujana slotted a total of seven goals to secure the Golden Boot award while his team-mate Muhammad Faez Mat Esa was the recipient of the Best Goalkeeper award.
A total of 40 teams took part in the recent tournament.
In the last four, Putrajaya Marriott ended the four-time finalists Sunway Resorts’ campaign with a convincing 4-1 win.
The Saujana overcame First World Hotel with a 1-0 win in the other semi-finals.
“Sunway Resorts could not maintain their winning streak from the preliminary matches. They were exhausted. They could not cope with the pace and allowed defending champions Putrajaya Marriott to chalk up a comfortable win,” said Zulkarnain.
It was also the first time in the series for Sunway Resorts failing to book their place in the final.
Sunway Resorts edged First World Hotel in the play-off for third decided through spot-kick and Sunway Resorts won 5-4 on penalties.
Meanwhile, hotel sides nationwide will be vying for honours in the third inter-hotel seven-a-side veteran tournament for social footballers aged above 35 years in Kuala Lumpur on July 7.
