Flying 41,000km in 50 days
Tan is attempting to fly across 20 countries over a 50-day period in a single-engine Cessna aircraft. MALAYSIA’S latest tourism attraction comes in the form of a young Malaysian who is attempting to break several records for being the youngest pilot to travel solo around the world in a single-engine Cessna 210 Silver Eagle aircraft.
Captain James Anthony Tan, 21, is the first and youngest Malaysian to travel 41,000km across 20 countries over a 50-day period, and the historic flight is set to break two records — the Guinness World Records and the World Aviation Academy.
Tan will also have the honour of entering the Malaysia Book of Records as the youngest pilot in Malaysia and South-East Asia to attempt such a journey.
Called the 1Malaysia Round the World, the expedition with the theme “1Malaysia 1Dream 1Flight Around the World” is organised by the Malaysian Youth Pilot Association and Malay-sian Felda Youth Council in partnership with 1Malaysia For Youth.
Tan was scheduled to arrive in Doha, Qatar, last Wednesday before travelling to Karachi, Pakistan. He has made 23 stops across 14 countries since the start of the expedition on March 28.
He will fly through India, Myanmar and Thailand before returning to Malaysia tomorrow.
Supporting Tan’s attempt is Tourism Malaysia, which has so far provided a warm welcome at major stops in Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Jordan.
Through its overseas offices and in collaboration with the Malaysian embassies and high commissions, Tourism Malaysia has organised press conferences and interviews to generate publicity.
Tan has become an unofficial tourism ambassador for Malaysia as he pilots the single-engine Cessna bearing the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 (VMY 2014) logo around the world.
Tan’s expedition is expected to create awareness of Malaysia as a tourist destination. especially in conjunction with VMY 2014.
It is hoped this will contribute significantly towards Malaysia’s goal of achieving 36 million tourist arrivals and RM168bil in tourism revenue by 2020.
