Construction of convention centre on track
set in place: An aerial view of the MICE project site from the Ipoh City Council building, recently. THE frequent heavy rain has not affected the construction of Ipoh’s first MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) centre as work is on schedule.
Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim said piling tests were being conducted on the 1.34ha project site to determine the strength of the pilings before proceeding with the foundation works.
“These tests usually require between one to two weeks to be completed and once it is okay to proceed, the piling work will take up to seven months.
“The site has already been cleared and we are at the very initial stage of the project, but everything is going well, although construction work is not carried out when it rains,” Roshidi said.
The convention centre is being constructed at the site of the former Bougainvillea Park, which is sandwiched between the Ipoh City Council’s building and Syuen Hotel.
Expected to be completed in about two years from now, the RM37mil convention centre will have a 2,880sq m exhibition centre that can accommodate up to 2,500 people, a grand ballroom, an 18- storey four-star hotel, business premises, a mall and service apartments.
There will also be 480 parking bays built, which will be managed by the council.
City folk have been critical of the project in the initial stages, as many had wanted the park to remain.
The city council has assured the public that the green lung would not be entirely lost but would be relocated to the rooftop above the three-storey convention centre.
