Gutsy lass aims to strike it big at MSSM meet
BUKIT Jalil Sports School student Noor Shahidatun Nadia Mohd Zuki, 17, from Kedah, will be on a dual mission at this year’s 55th annual track & field championship to be held in Kuantan from May 19-24.
She aims to break the Girls’ Under-18 long jump and triple jump records, and at the same time clear the magical mark of 13m in the triple jump.
Noor Shahidatun, who hails from Kubang Rotan in Alor Setar, has set her sight on a double record feat by posting new marks in both events in this year’s meet.
She almost had them in the bag last year when the meet was held in Kangar, Perlis, when she broke the triple jump record with a 12.36m effort and equalled the long jump record of 5.85m held by Tengku Moliana Zainol (Kelantan) since 2006.
In winning the triple jump gold medal, she also broke the long standing record of 12.24m held by Sabah’s Mary Nakaran since 2003 with a 12.36m effort.
Her confidence has been boosted after winning both the triple and long jump gold medals at the ASEAN games athletic meet in Surabaya, Indonesia, late last year. She won the long jump gold with a personal best of 6.03m and the triple jump by clearing 12.70m.
Her personal best in the triple jump is, however, 12.99m which she did at the FT All-Comers meet in March 2012 and coupled with the 6.03m effort in the long jump at the ASEAN meet, all signs point to a flourishing end in her last appearance at this year’s MSSM championship.
The easy-going lass with a captivating smile is not only aiming for both MSSM records but hopes to become only the third Malaysian woman athlete to clear the magical 13m mark in the triple jump.
Only two Malaysians have ever cleared 13m in the triple jump. They are Selangor’s Ngew Sin Mei (13.74m) and Noor Amira Mohd Nafiah of Perak (13.37m).
“I have been working hard to improve my jumping techniques since taking up both events five years ago.
“My mission this time around is to surpass the 13m mark in the triple jump and join the elite group of two other female athletes who have cleared it.
“I do not expect undue competition in both events and barring injury or unforeseen circumstances, I hope to accomplish my dual mission.
“My lifelong ambition is to represent the country in the Olympic Games one day and I hope this year’s MSSM meet will be the stepping stone to my dream,” said the winner of the 2012 Kedah Sports Girl of the Year award.
