Thailand praises Penang Port
THAILAND’S Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong has praised the efficiency of the Penang Port, saying it has the potential to become a strong regional port.
He said that products from Thailand’s Surat Thani province, bound for western countries, were now usually exported via the port.
“We would like to improve our ports in Ranong, Trang and Kantang Harbour which act as feeder products to Penang Port.
“With better cooperation between the two countries, we believe the logistics cost can be lowered and our products can reach the global markets at a cheaper cost,” Kittiratt said.
He was giving a talk at the ‘Penang Story Symposium: Khaw Sim Bee na Ranong and Shared History of Malaysia-Thailand Relations: From the Past to Future Cooperation’ at Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang on Saturday.
He said Thailand was also working to improve its transport and logistics system, including the quality of its highway and railway networks to capitalise on the economic opportunities available through the Penang Port.
Kittiratt, who visited the port on Friday, gave the thumbs up to the facility after witnessing its systems and technology in operation.
During the Thailand-Malaysia business dialogue and forum later that day, Kittiratt said the Thai Government would provide support for business folk in both countries.
“We will look into how the Thais can work closely with Malaysians in different aspects,” he said.
Among those present were Thai ambassador to Malaysia Krit Kraichitti, Thailand-Malaysia business council chairman Payungsak Chartsutipol and council co-chairman Megat Mizan Nicholas.
Tan Sri Datuk Dr Michael Yeoh gave a presentation on ‘Malaysian Economic Outlook: Strategies, Priorities and Challenges’ during the dialogue session.
