BALIK PULAU: Two PKR leaders claim that there are at least three locations here where voters can redeem the vouchers they had allegedly received before polling day.

Bayan Baru MP Sim Sze Tzin and former state assembly speaker Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain said they had received information that voters had been allegedly redeeming the vouchers at Sungai Dua, Pulau Betong and Tanjung Bungah for the past few days.

Abdul Halim said he had lodged reports on the matter with the state Election Commission and the police on Friday but so far, he had not received any feedback from the police.

Sim said: “This could be a possible vote-buying exercise.

“If it’s true, the police, Election Commission, and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must take action.”

It was reported on Saturday that George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng had confirmed a police report was lodged, adding that the case would be referred to the Penang MACC.

Yesterday, Sim and Abdul Halim walked into a makeshift structure next to a coffeeshop in Pulau Betong after they received news that some people were lining up there to redeem their vouchers.

A man suddenly shouted out to several men sitting behind a counter inside the makeshift structure. About five men in the group then allegedly left the place hastily, using the alley behind, carrying a laptop, printer, stationery and a box.

Sim said the men’s behaviour and hasty exit made him suspicious that money was being distributed openly there.

Abdul Halim said if the vote-buying activity was true, then the victory claimed by the candidate in that particular constituency was invalid, adding that he would lodge a report with the Penang MACC today.
