Man who torches house claims devil was inside
GEORGE TOWN: A man burned down his brother’s house after a misunderstanding, claiming that there was a devil inside.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the 37-year-old man was under the influence of drugs when he set fire to the village house in Tanjung Tokong Road at 5pm yesterday.
He said the man told police that there was a devil inside the building.
He said the man, who is a drug addict, was arrested and taken to the police station for a urine test.
“The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire,” ACP Gan said, adding that the suspect had a record for drug offences. No casualties were reported.
Four shoplots in Kampung Rawa and an empty house in Magazine Road were also destroyed in two earlier fires.
State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said no one was injured in the Kampung Rawa fire which occurred at 3.20pm and was put out at 4pm.
“The four units burnt down were all commercial units consisting of a recycling centre, a motorcycle repair shop and two store rooms,” he said.
Phee said the house in Magazine Road had caught fire at 6.45pm due to the burning of rubbish nearby.
