Rep supports re-drawing of boundaries
IT is high time that constituency boundaries are redrawn, said Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai in welcoming the decision to carry out a redelineation exercise.
He urged the Election Commission (EC) to carry out the exercise in a clean, transparent and systematic manner.
“They have to do it based on a consultative approach with the EC discussing matters with the relevant state governments,” said Wong of DAP.
He was commenting on an article in Sin Chew Daily recently that the EC was planning to re-delineate all the boundaries of state constituencies in the country.
It was reported that the exercise would start this year, and the last re-delineation carried out before this was in 2003.
Wong said that based on reports, the ideal number of people in urban areas of the new state constituencies would be 25,000 and 15,000 to 20,000 in semi-urban areas and fewer than 15,000 in rural areas.
“From the results of the recent elections, I agree that it is time to change as, for example, the Paya Terubong constituency itself has close to 40,000 constituents,” he said.
He said four other constituencies in Penang had 30,000 constituents each while Batu Maung and Batu Uban each had more than 29,000.
“The huge number provides a lot of problems, especially during polling day where some voters had to queue up for more than three hours to vote,” he said after a walkabout to thank voters at the Air Itam Market.
