Shining a light for unity

GEORGE TOWN: Members of several non-governmental organisations lit up pelita (tea light candles) to express their rejection of racism on the anniversary of the May 13 riots in 1969.
They used the candles to form the words ‘Tolak Rasisme (Reject Racism)’ at the Speaker’s Square at the Esplanade here last night.
The group of about 50, led by Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) Penang, arrived at around 7.45pm with placards, two banners and candles but their efforts to light up the candles took some time because of the strong wind.
Suaram Penang spokesman Sean Ho said the May 13 incident was history.
“Political parties should not raise such racial issues again.
“We, the rakyat, want unity and peace, regardless of race,” he said in his speech.
State Welfare, Caring Society, and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the general election was over, and it was time for damage control.
