Man caught for bogus club membership sale

MUAR: An unemployed man was charged in two magistrate’s courts here for trying to sell bogus memberships to an association under the patronage of the Sultan of Johor.

Lau Kok Chai, 65, claimed trial to inducing Chin Song to pay RM1,000 for a membership card purportedly issued by Pertubuhan Perpaduan Amal Negeri Johor (PERAJA), which Lau claimed was an association under the patronage of the Johor Sultan and would entitle cardholders to special perks.

The alleged offence occurred at a stall outside the Sungai Abong Road Transport Department (JPJ), between Sept 15 and Oct 3, last year.

Magistrate Suzana Mokthar allowed bail at RM5,000 with one surety.

Lau was also hit with a second similar charge of cheating Tey Choon Hong outside the same stall between Sept 4 and Oct 10, 2012.

He faces a maximum 10 years in prison, whipping and a fine for each charge, if convicted under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kartini Kasran prosecuted in both cases while Lau was unrepresented.

Lau pleaded for lower bail, say-ing he had a heart condition and was financially challenged as he was jobless.

Magistrate Nor Shahid Abd Malik set bail at RM12,000 with two sureties and an additional condition that the accused report into the nearest police station once a week.

Both magistrates fixed May 23 for the next mention.

It was reported that Lau was also charged earlier this month at the Johor Baru magistrate’s court for three similar offences.
