The competition, held for the first time in Kuantan, was opened to both chefs and aspiring chefs aged between 18 and 24.
Of all the participants, only one - Siti Zulaikha Abd Wahab, 22 - had obtained full marks.
“I am still in shock. I cannot believe that I was lucky enough to score full marks in my first competition,” said Siti Zulaikha, a final-year student at Ikip.
Her hard work paid off as she had admitted to spending more than 10 hours in the bakery preparing for the competition.
“I definitely would not be able to do it by myself.
“I was very lucky to have such a dedicated chef to guide me and friends who were very selfless,” she said, adding that her friends would come over to help her after they were done with their projects.
Professing her wish to open up her own bakery in the future, Siti Zulaikha admitted that it takes a lot of patience and attention to details when it comes to making pastry.
“It has to be exact and if the pastry does not turn out right, we have to throw it away and start from the scratch.
“It is frustrating at times but it becomes bearable when you have a love for it,” she said.
Siti Zulaikha said on the day before the competition, she stayed up all night to perfect her entry for the Apprentice Bread Showpiece category.
“My friend was helping me until 4am after which we rushed it to the competition freshly baked,” she said.
Her friend Nur Syahira Ruslan, 20, took part in the Apprentice One Decorated Dummy Wedding Cake category.
Although she did not win, Nur Syahira said she was proud of her efforts.
“I am not disappointed as I have learnt a lot in the process,” she said.
Chef Mohd Fauzi Wari, who is in charge of guiding Siti Zulaikha for the competition, had nothing but praises about her.
“She is very patient and dilligent. Of course, there were problems faced in the process but she never gave up.
“It only spurred her to do better,” he said.
