NGO sends protest note over Thaksin’s allegation
KOTA BARU: The Kelantan People's Action Council (MTRK) has submitted a protest note to Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra over his allegation that Kelantan was a training centre for Thai insurgents.
The two-page note was handed over by MTRK president Datuk Ibrahim Ali to Thai Consul-General to Malaysia Sukho Pirmam at his office here at 11.30am yesterday.
Ibrahim, who was accompanied by some 200 council members, said MTRK considered the statement a vicious lie to cover Thaksin's weakness following the huge number of deaths among southern Thai Muslims in Tak Bai on Oct 25.
Bernama reported him as saying that Thaksin should have investigated the matter thoroughly before making sensitive accusations which could adversely affect bilateral relations between the two countries.
In Johor Baru, Backbenchers Club chairman Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said Thaksin should not shift his burden to solve the problems in restive southern Thailand to Kuala Lumpur.
Thaksin should show proof of the existence of training camps in Kelantan and use diplomatic channels instead of making accusations against Malaysia through the media, he said.
In Ipoh, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali also called on Thaksin to investigate carefully before making statements that Malaysia was harbouring insurgents.
In Kangar, the Malaysia-Thai Association is dismayed with Thaksin for accusing Malaysia of harbouring insurgents and training them in the jungles of Kelantan.
Association president Senator Siw Chun Eam said Thaksin seemed to want to drag Malaysia into Thailand’s woes.
Siw Chun said Thaksin should provide evidence instead of hurling wild accusations.
