Govt considering having swimming pools at all NS camps

PORT DICKSON: The government is considering having swimming pools at all National Service Training (PLKN) camps next year to replace natural ponds as the venue for water activities for trainees.

National Service Training Department (JLKN) Director-General Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said the camp operators concerned would be informed on the size, depth and other specifications on the swimming pool.

Speaking to reporters after a working visit to the PDS Resort National Service Training camp at Pasir Panjang near here today, he said currently only the PLKN camp in Sibu, Sarawak, had a swimming pool.

"So, to meet the schedule of compliance, all PLKN camps must have a swimming pool," he added.

Following the death of a National service trainee due to suspected Leptospirosal infection at the Terkok PLKN Camp in Sungai Sipuk, Perak on March 12 this year, JLKN had suspended all water training modules at its training camps.

Abdul Hadi said that more than 24,000 youths were currently undergoing training at the 79 PLKN camps nationwide. - Bernama
