Ex-deputy education minister Mahadzir dies at 67

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mahadzir Mohd Khir (pic) has passed away from a stroke at 67.

His eldest son Muhamad Anas, 35, said his father had been admitted to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) after suffering a stroke at 6pm on Tuesday while resting at home with his family.

“He was unconscious and the doctors told us that there was bleeding in his brain. He was in coma when he passed away,” he said here.

The remains are expected to be brought to the Section 14 mosque in Petaling Jaya before burial at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery at 10am today.

Dr Mahadzir, who was born on May 16, 1945, in Yan, Kedah, leaves behind his wife Datin Dr Amla Salleh, three children and a grand-daughter.

Muhamad Anas said his father, who underwent a heart surgery in 2004, recently attended a relative's wedding here and accompanied his wife to a seminar in the United States before Hari Raya.
