Special IDs for monks and nuns

PENANG: More than 1,000 monks and nuns will now have to apply for special identification cards issued by the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA) under a move to flush out bogus monks.

Penang MBA secretary Lim Tien Phong said that there had been too many cases of so-called monks from here and Thailand going around soliciting funds from the public, purportedly for their temples.

“It is difficult to distinguish the bogus ones from the real ones without proper identification,” he said, adding that the decision was made at the association’s executive council meeting on Jan 2.

Lim said the identity cards would also enable MBA to have proper records of the monk and nun fraternity.

He said the cards would contain particulars such as name, address, identity card number, place and date of ordainment and the master’s name.

Application forms are available at the MBA. For details, call 04-226 2690.
