FAM vow to act tough on racism

By ERIC SAMUEL

PETALING JAYA: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) will not hesitate to punish officials and players who make racist remarks.

FAM disciplinary committee chairman Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad warned yesterday that they viewed such matters seriously.

“We don’t want such incidents in our country,” he said following an incident between Pahang’s import striker Viatcheslav Melnikov and Sarawak skipper Bobby Chua during their Malaysia Cup Group A match at the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan on Aug 24.

Azzuddin said the committee had to step in following the Sarawak FA’s complaint to the Pahang FA that Melnikov had threatened the Bobby after the game. Melnikov is also alleged to have confronted Bobby at the hotel in Kuantan.

The Pahang FA took immediate disciplinary action on Melnikov but not before pointing out that the Russian was a victim of racist comments made by Bobby first.

“We won’t tolerate such acts. We have written to the Sarawak FA (FAS) asking for an explanation on the matter. The State FAs have to remind their players not to resort to making racial remarks on foreign players,’’ said Azzuddin at the Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya.

Melnikov appeared before the committee with his team officials.

Azzudin said they were satisfied with the action taken by the Pahang FA in punishing the player. He, however, issued a stern warning to the Sarawak FA and hoped that there won’t be a repeat of such an incident.

In another case, Selangor striker Mass Sarr was found guilty of violent conduct in the Malaysia Cup Group C match against Perlis on Aug 24. The Liberian striker, who had pleaded not guilty, appeared before the disciplinary committee and was suspended for two matches and fined RM500.

Mass Sarr has already sat out a match and will now miss their Malaysia Cup quarter-final tie against Pahang at the Shah Alam Stadium on Oct 15.

Perlis defender Adrien Jurad Chamrong, who had pleaded guilty for the same incident, was suspended for a month and fined RM500. He was suspended for a month because Perlis are out of the Malaysia Cup.
