Floods swamp parts of Selangor
BY CECIL FUNG AND OLIVIA LEEPETALING JAYA: Continuous heavy rain lasting several hours resulted in floods in various parts of Selangor yesterday.
Among the areas affected were certain parts of Rawang, Subang and Sungai Buloh.
Residents in Sungai Buloh and Subang said the floods were the worst they had ever experienced, with water levels reaching over a metre in some places.
The floodwaters rose so swiftly that some residents barely had time to make it to safety and could not salvage anything.
“It was like lightning. We noticed the water rising but didn't think it would be this bad and quick,” said Suraya Hassan, 21, a resident at Sungai Plong, Sungai Buloh, whose brother's Perodua Kancil was partially submerged.
In Kampung Melayu Subang, Johorean Fauziah Isnen said she and her family had planned to balik kampung today but would have to put it off for a while.
“Whenever it flooded in the past, it usually came after three to four days of rain. This time, however, the water began to rise at 3am, just three hours after it started raining,” the housewife said.
As a result of floods in the area, 102 residents were evacuated to the Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam hall in Taman Subang Perdana.
A visit there at 3pm found that floodwaters had not subsided even after 12 hours.
Norbazlina Md Noor, 27, said that it was the second time in two weeks the area had been flooded.
“Whenever it rains, we have trouble sleeping because we're afraid of floods,” she added.
Another Kampung Melayu Subang resident, Raja Mohd Khalid, 50, said the flood was probably caused by land clearing for development projects nearby.
In Kampung Rawang Tin and Kampung Datuk Lee Kim Sai in Rawang, floodwaters started rising from 7.30am and rose to knee level at about 8.30am.
Danaletchemy Dolai Singh, 41, believed the flood was due to poor drainage and siltation at the nearby Sungai Rawang, saying that it was not the first time the area had been flooded.
She added that even after a major flood in 2001, nothing had been done to mitigate the situation.
“Some people even moved out because nothing was done,” she said in frustration.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel in the affected areas said the situation was under control in the various areas but they were on standby if there is a recurrence due to more rain.
