Site found to date back 40,000 years
BY NG SU-ANNPENANG: A Paleolithic Age settlement at Bukit Bunuh in Lenggong, Perak, has been confirmed to date back 40,000 years and not between 20,000 and 30,000 years as previously estimated.
The more accurate figure was derived with the help of the Dating Laboratory of University of Wollonggong, Australia, which used the optical dating method.
The archaeological site excavated by Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Archaeology Research Centre was the country’s first where the method was used.

“With the finding, we can better interpret of the lifestyle, technology and environment of the early settlers,” he said.
Dr Mohd said the site was among four open areas and seven caves spanning 8sq km where his team started excavating early last year.
