PENANG: The 26-year-old tour manager who was classified as a probable case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) died in the Penang Hospital early on Tuesday.
The death of the young man, who had been in the isolation ward for close to three weeks, brings to two the number of SARS-related fatality in the country so far.
Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon confirmed the man’s death but declined to elaborate on the details which were expected to be released by the Health Ministry later in the day.
He was speaking to newsmen before opening the Penang Bridge-Jalan Sungai Pinang stretch of the Jelutong Expressway this morning.
Health Ministry deputy director-general Datuk Dr Ismail Merican was quoted as saying on Sunday that the man had been put under elective ventilation since last Thursday as he was too tired to breathe on his own.
The man had travelled to Beijing from March 15 to 23 and returned to Penang before going to Bangkok from March 28 to 31.
He became sick shortly after his return and had sought treatment in two private hospitals and two private clinics before being admitted to the Penang Hospital on April 5.
