Moulding youngsters to become better drivers

By RENEE CHOONG and OLIVIA LEE

KUALA LUMPUR: In view of the number of accidents caused by reckless driving, the Transport Ministry wants to shape the attitude of youngsters before they get their licence.

It is proposing to introduce an attitude-shaping module as a long-term measure to complement the existing programmes offered by driving schools.

Minister Datuk Chan Kong Choy said good attitude on the road must begin at a young age.

It would be pointless to correct the drivers later, he said.

“Thus we have to start them young, way before they are qualified to sit for their driving test,” he said after unveiling the SR3 BSA-Radical SuperSport racing car that will be driven by the BSA Racing Team during the Merdeka Millennium Endurance race 2003 at the Sepang International Circuit.

Chan said that drivers, especially the new and young ones, needed to exercise more caution on the road.

He said the number of deaths could be reduced from 5,000 recorded last year if Malaysians could shed their impatience and lack of concern for other drivers.

The time had come for the ministry to look into this matter seriously, he said.

“I take this as a very big challenge for me, the ministry and the nation as a whole,” said Chan, who took over the Transport portfolio recently.
