Irish PM meets Malaysian alumni

FOLLOWING his attendance at the Fifth Asia Europe Meeting (Asem) in Hanoi, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern took time out from his hectic schedule to visit Malaysia and meet with committee members of the Malaysia-Ireland Alumni Association (MIAA).

The reception was held at the residence of Ireland's ambassador to Malaysia Daniel Mulhall.

Describing the alumni as excellent ambassadors for Irish education, he highlighted the fact that more than 1,000 young Malaysians are studying in Ireland today.

“These young people are part of the extended Irish family and strengthen the bonds between Ireland and Malaysia,” he said.

There are currently two Irish-linked educational institutions in Malaysia - Penang Medical College run by University College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, and the Accountancy and Business College in Kuala Lumpur which involves Dublin Business School in collaboration with Mara.

The Irish Universities Medical Consortium, representing the medical faculties of four Irish universities, has an office in Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to these existing linkages, Ireland's universities are discussing proposals for more twinning arrangements and collaborations to offer students opportunities in fields besides medicine such as engineering and computer science.

Ahern said Ireland is eager to further the cooperation between the Irish and Malaysian education systems. The association was founded in 2003 to bring together Malaysians who received their professional training in Ireland.
