Paper: Hewitt devastated by split
SYDNEY: Former world No. 1 player Lleyton Hewitt has been left “angry, embarrassed and devastated” after his split with fiance Kim Clijsters of Belgium, the Sydney-based Sunday Telegraph has reported.
Clijsters, also a former No. 1 tennis player, announced on Friday on her website that their planned February wedding had been called off and that the pair had split up. The Telegraph said Clijsters called Hewitt on Thursday to tell him that the relationship was over.
The newspaper said Hewitt, 23, left Australia yesterday for France, where he is entered in the Paris Masters tournament this week.
“He's angry, embarrassed, devastated, distraught – all of that stuff,” a friend was quoted as saying by the newspaper. “He's been kicked in the guts and he's been kicked in the guts internationally and embarrassingly.
“He had a few signs but when it came, it came as a huge shock.”
Hewitt's grandfather, Max Hewitt, said he was shocked when told the news on Friday night.
“It's a big surprise,” he said. “We're trying to find out what happened. We have no idea what went wrong.” – AP
