TAT: Visit safer parts of Thailand’
KANGAR: The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has advised Malaysians to visit the country's 73 other provinces rather than the three southernmost provinces facing unrest.
TAT (Malaysia and Brunei) director Sommas Siriwong, who said it was still difficult to evaluate whether it was safe to visit Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani, advised tourists to visit other places of interest.
We have altogether 76 provinces. Thailand is quite a vast country with diverse attractions. We do not place much emphasis on tourism in just three provinces. There is much more to discover in other provinces, he said.
Since the unrest in southern Thailand, Sommas said more Malaysians were visiting other areas, including Phuket, which had recorded a higher number of Malaysian tourists.
Sommas said northern Thailand offered a cooler climate while religious attractions could be found in central region provinces such as Suratthani, Nakhon Si Tammarat and Trang.
He said cost-saving packages were being planned together with AirAsia to make Bangkok and various parts of Thailand more affordable to Malaysian visitors. Sommas added that TAT and Thai travel trade members were planning a grand Loy Krathong festival later this year to attract more tourists.
